Why didn't he remove the high places?
2 chronicles 15:1-5
Now the Spirit of God came on Azariah the son of Oded, and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the LORD is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.
For many days Israel was without the true God and without a teaching priest and without law. But in their distress they turned to the LORD God of Israel, and they sought Him, and He let them find Him.
In those times there was no peace to him who went out or to him who came in, for many disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands. Nation was crushed by nation, and city by city, for God troubled them with every kind of distress.
But you, be strong and do not lose courage, for there is reward for your work.
Today in church we did lectio divina, a form of meditational scripture praying. Very cool . . . .
First you read it and pick out a phrase or a word. Read it again and meditate about how it is meaningful for your life today. Then you read it again and try to see if Godis calling you to do something . . . The challenge for something great.
Anyway, with the above version - here is my really bizarre meditation from God about it . . .I feel like the Army went through the period without a teaching priest and without law (sometimes I think we are still there . . .seriously). As New Life church planters, it seemed like we were sometimes on the outside looking in and we could see the unrest and the strife that was within. People were fighting about different ways of doing ministry, different ways of church planting, different forms of music, different styles of music, even huge disagreements on baptism and communion . . .as if those really matter to God (although the baptism and communion things are probably pretty important to God).
Anyway, I feel like we turned to God (the Army, the leadership, the new heights movement) and we were able to find Him in the midst of the struggles and he was able to be seen and felt again in a whole new way and light.
Later in the chapter, it talks about how they made a covenant with Him and it was a good thing. But even though the kings heart was fully committed to God,he never removed the high places of idol worship in the kingdom. And for 35 years, he had peace but he was eventually brought down by his lack of trust in God.
Are we the same in our dealings with God? In The Salvation Army, I mean? We say that we are fully committed to God and I believe that we are doing the best that we can. But we have several high places that we refuse or neglect to move and I worry that those things will be our undoing. Our high places in the Army could be our trust in money, our relationships with non-Christians (being bonded together), our lack of disregard for Hebraic roots. I believe that each of these can and will have a great impact on the future of the Army -
What is MY part in making sure that the impact is not life-threatening?
